Proskiw Engineering Ltd. (PEL) was formed in 1992 to provide consulting engineering services in the fields of building science and technology, energy management, and training. Since formation, the firm has carried over one hundred projects for private, public, and utility clients.

PEL provides inspection and testing services for building commissioning purposes and for investigations into various types of building envelope problems. These services include:

  • Forensic investigations of building problems.
  • Airtightness testing of building components, assemblies, and complete structures using CGSB and ASTM standards to provide quantitative and qualitative identification of air leakage locations.
  • Envelope pressure regime evaluations to assess the impact of mechanical and natural pressures on the building envelope.
  • Water leakage investigations to determine the sources of water penetration into the building and/or envelope.

These services are provided both for quality control and research purposes and have included the development of novel, specialized testing procedures to suit the needs of the project. Results of these investigations are often integrated with inputs from other architectural and engineering disciplines to form a comprehensive understanding and explanation of the observed problems. Typical projects have included commercial structures, hospitals, personal care homes, schools, swimming pools, single- and multi-family residential and institutional buildings.

Energy-related projects have included: research projects, evaluation of energy conservation products and systems, energy audits of buildings, preparation of retrofit guidelines for utility Demand Side Management programs, development of energy analysis procedures, analyses of the energy and cost impacts of industry-wide conservation codes and standards. These assignments have frequently involved computer modelling of existing and proposed buildings, analysis and reconciliation of utility data, airtightness testing, and energy monitoring of complete buildings and specific end uses.

PEL provides training services for R-2000 Builders' Workshops, HOT2000 energy analysis software and airtightness testing procedures. It also develops and prepares seminars, workshops and courses for industry, utilities, codes officials, professional groups and the general public on a variety of building science and energy topics. Gary Proskiw is also a member of the CMHC International Training Team.
